“Personal Attention” is an ASMR technique that can help you relax.

Feeling stressed? Have you lost faith in your “concentration” apps and therapeutic techniques to reach ultimate relaxation? Well, say goodbye to the constant stress and frustration and hello to the sensational soft-spoken voices of ASMR enthusiasts.

Today’s scientists continue to debate the processes through which ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) occurs. However, it is widely believed that the endorphins, which are responsible for the bond between a child and parent, primarily cause this sensation. According to PsychologyToday.com, “When a child and parent are close to one another, the infant’s brain will release an endorphin neurotransmitter receptor, making the child feel safe, secure, and relaxed.” In a similar situation, this particular release of endorphins signals the brain which perceives the same trustworthy environment for the individual. Many may refer to this process as the tingling sensation which originates in the scalp and continues to the base of the neck in response to a specific stimulus, or most commonly, a sound.

ASMR creates an unexplainable spontaneous effect that brings sensual pleasure to many who attempt to trigger it. According to ScienceDaily.com, “There isn’t a specific audible stimuli that works for every person; in fact, its effects are different for each individual.” Some of the most popular triggers include:

  • Whispering
    • This specific stimulus focuses on sound rather than verbal communication which causes a powerful effect and can put the user into an extreme state of relaxation, often encouraging sleep.
  • Scratching and Tapping
    • Scratching and tapping, used through a magnified microphone, creates an echoed effect by scratching a surface with various textures.
  • Personal Attention
    • Personal attention is directed more towards physical touch, as some enjoy others playing with their hair or applying makeup.

Not only does ASMR contribute to the relaxation and pleasure of an individual, but it also has a numerous amount of health benefits. Researchers from the University of Sheffield say, “Those who experience the phenomenon had significantly reduced heart rates while watching ASMR videos compared to people who do not experience ASMR.” Not only did participants’ heart rates drastically decrease, but after watching, they showed a significant increase in positive emotions. As compared to videos that do not utilize the ASMR triggers, those who experience ASMR found they are relieved of stress and have an easier time sleeping.

This holistic natural approach to stress relief is an effective way that someone can ground themselves and encourage healthy habits. This concept, unlike more expensive tactics, allows the individual to be in control of their emotions and encourage self-care in a way that appeals to the ideals of this generation. With a simple tap of their fingers, anyone in search of a painless and cheap source of security and comfort can instantly be satisfied.
