Lakeland Regional High School’s Robotics team, Team 223 Xtreme Heat, is having an exciting season fueled by their innovation, toughness, and the performance of their robot, Inferno.
The team’s initial design for the robot was created through research and investigation along with starter robots to fine-tune their approach to the engineering of Inferno. Robotics Club Advisor Mr. Randy Coren described their inspiration as “steal the best and invent the rest.” The fiery theme of the robot allowed for inspiration of the name and design, but the team’s philosophy of “SEAR” (Simplicity, Efficiency, Accessibility, and Reliability), was the foundation for major designing decisions.

Mr. Coren has said that “early on we believed that we had a good design for the game, but when we showed up to our first competition in Week 1, we learned that we were strongly outmatched.”
Despite winning the Industrial Design Award for the engineering of the robot and securing a sixth place ranking at the Warren Hills District Competition in Washington, New Jersey from March 6-8, resilience and adaptation brought Inferno to an even greater level of success.
A brand new transformation and redesign of Inferno felt necessary after noticing the errors in competitions. Constant jamming with the intake and shooter along with a limited capacity brought on new ideas for a better success rate when competing against the big leagues.
The new version of Inferno consisted of a better dropdown intake, an expanding hopper, a wider 3-ball shooter, and limelight vision along with auto-align. These new and efficient systems have allowed Team 223 to Rank 12 overall, to win “The Innovation in Control Award” (recognizing the team’s excellence in integrated control systems), and to be the First Pick of Alliance Six at the Mount Olive District Event on Saturday March 28 through Sunday March 29.
The rewards and high rankings throughout the competitions have eventually led up to the secured spot at the Mid-Atlantic District Championships at Lehigh University on Thursday April 16 through Saturday April 18 for the 15th consecutive appearance representing LRHS’s Robotics Club. If the team places in the Top 20 at the competition, they will be advancing to the World Championships in Houston, Texas later this month according to Mr. Coren.
Outside of the competitions, the Robotics Club allows students to learn engineering skills with hands-on experience. When asking a member of Team 223, junior Craig Palatucci, what interests him the most after joining the Robotics Club, he said, “the machines and hands-on experience.” Palatucci also added that he “wanted to learn how to use most machines and computer aided design software.” The club consistently allows members to gain more experience and knowledge year after year.
As Inferno has gradually expanded its abilities and the team is feeling confident in the robot, the season is shining with excitement and competitive success. Xtreme Heat is feeling the burning passion for a win, and Inferno is ready to radiate triumph.
