On Sunday January 11, the Golden Globes kicked off awards season with one of the biggest nights in Hollywood. The 83rd annual Golden Globes, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser and airing on CBS, took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. There were many noteworthy films and shows nominated, but some of the standout awards went to the movie Hamnet as Best Motion Picture for a drama and the movie One Battle After Another which took home awards in several categories like “Best Comedy or Musical” and best directing and acting awards while KPop Demon Hunters took home the awards for “Best Original Song” and “Best Animated Motion Picture”.
The Golden Globes show is a three-hour affair with 28 different awards categories. This year’s show had a viewership of 8.66 million live viewers and 18 million viewers on streaming servers. While viewership was down slightly this year, possibly due to NFL playoffs viewership and amid other factors, it was truly an eventful award show with many interesting fashion choices that left viewers begging for more. In fact, social media viewership related to the Golden Globes was at an all-time high.
Groundbreaking shows such as Adolescence starring the young actor Owen Cooper came home with four wins. Nominated among notable actors like Walter Goggins and Jason Isaacs from White Lotus, Cooper won the award for “Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.” Pulling off a win in this category was a huge deal as he is now the youngest actor ever to receive this award.
Meanwhile, the movie Hamnet, which tells the story of William Shakespeare’s family and the death of his son Hamnet, won “Best Motion Picture” among other awards such as Jessie Buckley winning “Best Female Actress” for her role as Shakespeare’s wife, Agnes.
Kpop Demon Hunters won “Best Animated Film” in a fierce competition with other great animated movies this year such as Zootopia which did amazing in the box office. Kpop Demon Hunters also won in other categories like “Best Original Song”.
Famous actors like Leonardo Dicaprio were nominated in the category for “Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Musical or Comedy”, but Timothée Chalamet took home the coveted award for his role in Marty Supreme. In his acceptance speech, Chalamet thanked his “partner” who happened to be sitting alongside him at the awards ceremony, Kylie Jenner.
Aside from awards, every year fashion critics await the red carpet pre-show where bold fashion choices are on full display. This year, notable fashion icons such as Ariana Grande stunned the carpet with a classy, black Vivienne Westwood dress departing from her pink motif in Wicked. A pregnant Hailee Steinfeld showed up in a soft pink Prada gown debuting her baby bump while Amanda Seifred stunned in a white dress from Versace. Elle Fanning showed up in all Gucci while Jennifer Lopez turned heads in a sheer, embroidered dress.
Many people said Hudson Williams from the film Heated Rivalry was the best dressed actor who showed up in a black and white suit. Mylie Cryus was also seen as a best dressed actress nominee as she showed up wearing a black stunner of a dress. Jenna Ortega who always dresses the part showed up in a black dress and called herself “The scariest girl you know cannot stop serving.”
Leonardo Dicaprio showed up in a not-so-memorable outfit as he showed up in a plain suit showing a lack of effort.
Aimee Lou Wood from White Lotus fame, who showed up in Vivienne Westwood gown like Ariana Grande, didn’t quite pull off the look she was aiming for as some said the dress was too big, like it was eating her up. On the other hand, some peculiar, but oddly great fashion choices were made by many. Bella Ramsey turned heads by showing up in a suit wrapped around in a pink bow, but many praised her for her bold fashion choice.
Every year there are crazy, drama-filled moments that happen on awards night. This year was no different. One of the biggest shockers was made by Nikki Glaser who joked about Leonardo Dicaprio dating young women. She apologized for making the joke saying, “We don’t know anything else about you! Open up, man!”
A viral clip of Jennifer Lopez ignoring and being dismissive to Glambot director Cole Walliser and many called Lopez a snob for not acknowledging him as he was speaking to her. Walliser defended her and said that the red carpet was hectic and that Lopez was just focused since it was late in the event.
From emotional speeches and witty one-liners, this year’s Golden Globes was packed with entertaining moments that left viewers with something to talk about.
