Fashion, drama, and chaos return in The Devil Wears Prada 2, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2006 movie. Directed once again by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, the movie was rated 6.8/10 by IMDb, however, I think it should be ranked a lot higher.
The original movie, The Devil Wears Prada, follows Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, who aspires to be a journalist. She takes a job at Runway magazine as the junior assistant of Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep. Miranda is very demanding and cutthroat. This makes the job horrible for Andy at first, but with help from the art director Nigel, played by Stanley Tucci, she begins to fit in with the job. When Andy starts to do better at work and earn the respect of Miranda, she begins to sacrifice her relationships with her friends and boyfriend. When Andy replaces Emily Charlton, played by Emily Blunt, on the Paris trip, we realize she is starting to become more ruthless like her boss. Finally, Miranda betrays Nigel to keep her position. Once Andy sees this, she decides to leave Runway and pursue her dream of journalism.

Stanley Tucci shared in an interview with Today, “Arguably, it has become a classic film. It endures, and people seem to have not been able to get enough of us. So here we are.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the sequel to that story set 20 years later in time. The story follows Andy who is now a successful journalist for The Vanguard, a New York daily newspaper. After getting laid off from the newspaper, she is forced to go back and work for Runway magazine again. There, Miranda is struggling to adapt to the digital magazine and she faces a scandal. The movie is filled with conflicts and Andy is always trying to fix them. Sometimes it works, and sometimes the issues end up worse than they were before.
Overall, this movie is a good sequel because the story felt original and realistic. The characters are a lot more mature as they have evolved in different ways. Meryl Streep really plays the strict and ruthless boss character perfectly, and this really makes the movie. Emily Blunt brings wit and drama to the story portraying the role of Miranda’s old assistant.
Emily Blunt told Today in an interview that, “There will be some sort of undoing that has to happen for all of them. But I adore playing her. I think that she’s a complete lunatic, clearly. But I find her sort of delicious and fun. I think it’s like now, she’s sort of even more insane because she has power.”
The sequel keeps the audience engaged with workplace conflicts, scandals, and tense relationships between the Runway staff. You will watch as the team tries to avoid large department cuts. The story also follows Miranda adapting to the modern ways of the workplace, as she learns what she can and cannot say in front of the new generation. The movie balances humor and drama, making the plot entertaining while still keeping the audience invested in the characters.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 shows us the themes of balancing home and work life, adapting to new norms, and understanding the influence of online media.
Fans of the original movie will love coming back to see what their favorite characters have been up to in the second movie. The storyline picked up where it left off successfully and the characters everyone loved so much still had their same charm. I personally rate this movie a 9/10.
Overall, The Devil Wears Prada 2 successfully continues the story while keeping the same glamour and drama that made the first movie so popular. With strong performances from the actors and actresses, the sequel gives fans a fun and emotional return to the world of Runway magazine.
