Lakeland’s 2018 girls tennis team

Lakeland Regional’s girls varsity tennis ended their fall 2018 season meeting goals both on and off the court.

With a tough schedule, the Lancer’s ended their season with a 4 – 15 record. The goal of the team was to work hard to improve their game. According to coach Erin Murphy, the girls did just that, going into each match with “heart and determination… Each player did well and played hard every time they took the court.”

The season also saw the team earning the distinction of winning the Big North Independence Conference Sportsmanship Award. On top of this, individual players were also recognized: Hannah Gerber, senior, earned 2nd team all-county and 2nd team all-conference; Ana Deftalinskij, senior, earned 2nd team all-conference; Rameen Mahmood, senior, earned honorable mention all-conference; and doubles team, Sophia Pucciariello, sophomore, and Nicole Knowles, senior, earned honorable mention all-county.

The tennis team also took on challenges off the court, with a goal to raise money to benefit Tennis for Life, a support group for breast cancer survivors. According to Coach Murphy, the team raised close to $600.00 for the organization.

Clearly, the team has a lot of “heart” both on and off the court, and we look forward to seeing what they do next season.
