Marvel has announced their upcoming movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This is something completely new for Marvel, because they are going to have their first Asian led movie.

Marvel has had many Asian heroes, but not many of them have been the star of their own movie. Most of the time they’re a side character, like Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy or Wong in Doctor Strange. Having Shang-Chi as the lead is a great display of how Marvel is still growing as a franchise.

The cast of this movie mainly consists of Asian actors and actresses. The star of the movie, Shang-Chi, will be played by Simu Liu. Some other familiar faces in the movie are Awkwafina as Katy, Michelle Yeoh as Jian Nan and Ronny Chieng as Jon Jon. Some exciting news for fans is that Tony Leung Chiu-wai will be back as the real Mandarin.

On top of having an Asian dominant cast, this movie has been heavily influenced by Chinese films. To keep the film authentic, they have hired real martial artists to train the cast.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be out on September 3, 2021. As always, it’s great to see big film companies expand their diversity.
