Winter Track Sprints Into Their Pandemic Season
The winter track team sprinted into their season this year facing many challenges but were able to overcome them and find success
Due to the snowy winter season and the global pandemic, the team didn’t think they would actually be able to have a season, according to Coach Damiano Conforti. “The winter was a dark time with COVID, and it was difficult to run a program with so many athletes,” Coach Conforti added.
With that being said, the goals this season were to compete while also keeping everyone safe, and it didn’t look like they were going to be able to do that. However, as the snow melted and COVIDcases started to decrease they “not only achieved that, but got to compete in many meets.”
The team got to compete in two championship meets, two trimeets and even got to host a home meet.
There wouldn’t be any season without the amazing players working so hard both as a team and on their own time. Two players that really stood out this season were senior TJ McCormack and junior Angelina Perez. McCormack made the boys team proud by throwing a North Jersey best record with a 51′ 1,” and Perez made the girls team proud by running in the national championship in Myrtle Beach and placing third.
Other players that stood out this season were senior Ethan Lehr, sophomores Nate Caldwell, Devine Crilly, and Owen Horevay for distance; freshman Kyle Keyes for sprints and jumps; senior Katie Bennorth for jumps, junior Hannah Miles for sprints; junior Allysa Devita for 800, junior Sarah Biss for hurdles; and senior Katie Mullin for sprints.
The hard work and dedication from the track team is an inspiration to keep pushing through and make the best of the season that is handed to us.
