Girls Track: Undefeated in their Conference
The 2019 spring season of girls varsity track was a huge success – the Lancers were undefeated in their conference and won the county relays.
The team had many strong players that had help them throughout the entire thing. Coach Louise Marlow, who is also a physical education teacher at Lakeland, credits seniors Grace Yost, Ana Deftanlinski, Katie Dempsey, and Emma Gibson for leading the team in the strong season. Yost, who is also a captain, dominated in the 400 hurdles, 100IH and the 400m relays, and is receiving first team All-County. Deftanlinski, another team captain, was an excellent jumper and made it all the way to the meet of champions. Dempsey took second All-County in javelin and was a huge part in her field. Gibson, captain with Yost and Deftanlinski, was a strong runner in the 800m, taking first team All-Conference.
Coach Marlow’s, along with coach and science teacher at LRHS George Lutz’s, expectations were surpassed and every one of their goals was achieved. Coach Marlow stated, “Our goal was to compete and win at the highest level. Creating a well-rounded team in all of our events. We reached our goals and even surpassed my expectations.”
This season of girls varsity track was a success, going beyond everyone’s expectations and being undefeated. With strong underclassmen players on the roster, next year they will most likely dominate the field again.
