Free Agent Signings Around the MLB
Free agency has been huge during the 2019 offseason of Major League Baseball. Some players, such as Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, have signed decade long contracts. Others kept their career alive by getting a short contract.
Having debatably one of the best offseasons in MLB history, the Philadelphia Phillies went out and spent big money on big players. Being one of the favorites throughout this offseason in “Bryce Harper sweepstakes,” the Phils signed the star outfielder for 13 years for $330 million.
Philadelphia also went and got outfielder Andrew McCutchen, up-and-coming star catcher J.T. Realmuto, relief pitcher David Robertson and resigned starting pitcher Aaron Nola.
Harper had the biggest contract ever in North American sports. That was true, until the Los Angeles Angels gave Mike Trout a contract extension for 12 years worth $430 million. Many thought that Trout would be making much more money, being arguably the best baseball player in the game; some think he is the greatest of all time. Either way, most people would do anything to have the kind of deal and money Trout got.
The New York Yankees also had a great offseason. With the Yankees’ already dangerous lineup, consisting of MVP candidate outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, catcher Gary Sanchez, and Rookie of the Year runner up Miguel Andujar, they added key pieces to beef up their lineup, rotation and bullpen.
The Yankees traded for Seattle Mariners’ ace James Paxton and signed Adam Ottavino to add to the best bullpen in baseball history. Resigning J.A. Happ was also a great decision. They also added DJ Lemahieu to have depth in their lineup. Not to mention, they signed RHP Gio Gonzalez to a minor league deal. On top of all this, they signed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to replace the injured Didi Gregorius until the summer.
According to Yankee General Manager Brian Cashman, Tulo “looks great,” after not playing since 2017.
Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres signed 26 year old superstar third baseman Manny Machado to a 10 year, $300 million contract to build around as their young star players get called up.
The Colorado Rockies resigned Nolan Arenado for eight years at $260 million. This means Arenado makes $32.5 million a year, making him one of the players who makes the most money yearly.
With Carlos Gonzalez leaving the Rockies and going to the Indians, Marwin Gonzalez leaving the Astros and going to the Twins, and Adam Jones leaving the Orioles and going to the Diamondbacks, many organizations had to say goodbye to their long time players who will be missed.
While there are still many good players like Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel remaining unsigned, there are a lot of players that are getting paid big money this season.
