Top 10 Unexpected Outcomes of the 2025 NFL Season
It is already eleven weeks into the 2025 NFL season, and so far, the year has been nothing short of unpredictable. From surprising breakout performances to shocking injuries and unexpected team standings, fans have been on an emotional roller coaster week after week. Analysts who made predictions for the season are being kept on their toes as unlikely players and teams are making headlines. Whether it’s Daniel Jones leading the Colts to victory, Mac Jones stepping into the spotlight, or veteran Matthew Stafford dominating the field, this season proves that in football, anything can happen. Here are the top ten surprises and storylines shaping the 2025 NFL season so far.

1. The Colts’ surprise success: The fact that the Colts are tied for #1 in the league says it all. Despite football fans and analysts’ low expectations at the start of the year, the Colts have been surprisingly resilient. The team is currently tied with the Patriots and Broncos for best record, largely due to the quarterback Daniel Jones (Danny Dimes). Despite expectations that were at an all-time low after his stint on the NY Giants, he has been able to play like a top 10 QB and lift the team to an 8-2 record here in Week 11.
2. Mac Jones replacing Brock Purdy: After Brock Purdy signed a groundbreaking contract of five years at $265 million dollars, everyone expected him to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league. More importantly, few of us had high expectations for the backup quarterback Mac Jones, or as I like to call him “The Macup”. However, when Brock Purdy got injured, Mac Jones had to take over for the team, and he’s doing a great job so far with 13 TD’s and six interceptions for 2,151 passing yards. Now, this doesn’t mean he’s better than Purdy by any means, but he’s still having a strong season.
3. Daniel Jones’s breakout year: Despite being in year seven at the age of 28 and having zero expectations for the season especially since he’s barely ever thrown over 3,000 yards and 20 TD’s. He is having a standout year and playing like a MVP contender, with 2,659 passing yards and 15 touchdowns with only seven interceptions against some of the best defenses in the league. Daniel Jones finally has coaching that is meant to fit his style of play, and now he’s finally playing like a true starting quarterback.
4. Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers’ successful season: The Buccaneers have always been a decent team as long as I can remember. For example, last season they had a 9-8 record and ended their season in the playoffs, with Baker Mayfield playing like an MVP favorite. However, since Baker Mayfield is practically Jesus in quarterback form, he has been able to lead them to a 6-3 season with an impressive stat line as always with 2,192 yards and 16 TD’s.
5. The Eagles lost to both the Broncos and Giants: Somehow the Eagles blew a 14-point deficit in the 4th against the Broncos, and as if it couldn’t get any worse, they also got blown out by the Giants in their first matchup of the season. They managed to right the ship after a rematch with the Giants though, reminding fans that they are the defending champs after all.
6. Ravens injuries ruin the team’s chances: Derrick Henry can’t hold a run without fumbling, even with the new defensive additions. So for starters, Lamar Jackson was injured, so without their star quarterback and Derrick Henry fumbling three times in the first three weeks, he single-handedly cost the team two games against both the Bills and Lions. Now with the defensive additions such as C.J. Gardner-Johnson, you would think the team would have been better, but after just one week Gardner-Johnson wanted off the team, making it a huge waste of time.
7. The Chiefs barely have a winning record for the first time in three seasons: The Chiefs now have a record of 5-4; however, the season hasn’t been easy at all after rough losses against the Chargers, Eagles, and Jaguars. Patrick Mahomes finally got his flow back and is back to being a mainstay QB. However, it was a grind getting over .500, and they aren’t leading their conference. Suffice it to say, the Chiefs aren’t really contenders at the moment.
8. Jets constantly lose by a very small margin: The Jets are typically horrible, so they are 2-7, which is par for the course. The weird part is that in four of those losses, they have lost by only two. In an even stranger turn of events, the team has won two games in a row, giving fans a little spark of hope.
9. Matthew Stafford’s MVP run: Matthew Stafford is 37 and has been playing for 16 seasons. However, despite this, some would argue that he is BY FAR the favorite for MVP right now. A little over halfway through the season, he has a crazy 2,427 yards with 25 TD’s and only TWO interceptions. He is at the top of pretty much everybody’s list of potential MVP candidates and for good reason.
10. Cam Skattebo’s season-ending injury: Cam Skattebo showed promise as a young and energetic running back who breathed new life into the Giants until his ankle bent backwards. He is now out for the season, leaving the Giants’ season in darkness with a questionable running back at best. One thing is for sure though- the Giants’ season if definitely over.
