Hezbollah Threatens To Intervene in the Israel-Hamas War
Hezbollah has made multiple threats to intervene in the Israel-Hamas War, following the killing of a Hezbollah commander in Beirut on January 8, 2024, as reported by CBS News. According to ABC News, there are fears that the two are closer to war than ever, with many fearing the results of a major escalation of the border conflict on the Lebanese border between Hezbollah and Israel.

Hezbollah, which means “Party of God ” in Arabic is a Shia militia and political party which operates in Lebanon ever since its founding in 1982. The group is highly influential in Lebanon and it’s government and is described by the Council of Foreign Relations as the most armed non-state actor with a militia numbering up to 40,000.

Possible Effects of Hezbollah Involvement in the Israel-Hamas War

If Hezbollah involved itself into the Israel-Hamas War, the conflict would expand dramatically in scale as it would see the war gain a new front in northern Israel between the IDF and Hezbollah. However, it will probably be a much harder fight for the IDF against Hezbollah given both its superior size to Hamas and the amount of equipment in Hezbollah’s possession, such as the drones.

If Hezbollah joins the war and it proves poorly for them, it would likely see them ousted from power by the Lebanese people which would severely impact Iran’s presence in the region. Even if Hezbollah starts to turn the tide of the war against Israel, it would likely still turn out poorly for them as the United States would have to be more involved in the war, possibly seeing a full scale intervention in the region. This would more than likely turn against Hezbollah and possibly lead to its destruction.

No matter what way the war goes, further involvement of Hezbollah is likely to lead to its destruction, whether it be at the hands of the Lebanese people or the hands of the United States.
