LRHS Thanks Their Teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week

This week marks the celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, which occurs annually during the first week of May. The Lancer Ledger staff went out and asked LRHS students about how their teachers have positively impacted their educational journeys and futures.

Thank You Mr. Brzozowski, from Dezire Camero
Thank You Mr. Brzozowski, from Dezire Camero

Camero, grade 12, told the Ledger that Mr. Brian Brzozowski, fencing coach and math teacher at LRHS, has had a positive impact on her high school experience. Cameo states that as a coach, he was able to guide his team through the fencing season by being social and building relationships with the team. Thank you, Mr. B!

Ryan, grade 9, expressed to the Ledger that Mr. Cole Lankford, business teacher at LRHS, has had an invaluable impact on her high school experience. Ryan described that Mr. Lankford is a very positive teacher, and is always able to make her smile. In addition, when asked if she had learned anything recently from Lankford, Ryan explained that he has taught her to always be kind and helpful to others. Thank you, Mr. Lankford!

Cusmano, grade 9, told the Ledger that Ms. Heather Lazoff, math teacher at LRHS, has made her time at Lakeland perpetually better. Cusmano explained that Ms. Lazoff is sweet, kind, and funny, and is always willing to listen and give advice to others. Lazoff has taught Cusmano that it is okay to fail, and that mistakes make us human. Thank you, Ms. Lazoff!

Lanza, grade 12, told the Ledger Ms Melissa Roush, English teacher, National Honor Society adviser, and Philosophy Club advisor, has had a drastic impact on her experiences at Lakeland. Lanza explained that Roush is always there for her students whenever they need someone. Roush has taught Lanza to question what she doesn’t inherently agree with and that 2+2 does equal 4, in a tribute to 1984 by George Orwell. Thank you for all of your time and support, Ms. Roush!

Thank You Mr. Lankford, Mr. McMahon, & Ms. Pagano, From Matthew Zak

Zak, grade 9, told the Ledger that business teacher Mr. Cole Lankford, science teacher Mr. Christopher McMahon, and English teacher Ms. Ann Pagano have all had massive effects on their experiences at Lakeland. Zak explained that all three are kind and compassionate to their students and that they make their classes interesting and fun. Zak remembers an impactful message Ms. Pagano once told him in class, “You think really deeply.”

Rose, grade 12, told the Ledger Ms. Melissa Roush, English teacher, National Honor Society adviser, and philosophy club leader, has helped to shape her time at Lakeland for the better. Rose expressed that Roush shows a constant support and respect for her students, treating each one as if they are “real people.” Rose also describes Roush as an understanding, considerate, compassionate teacher, who is filled with love and passion for her subject. Thank you, Ms. Roush!

Visotsky, grade 10, told the Ledger that one teacher that had an impact on him was technology teacher Mr. Randy Coren. Visotsky says that Mr. Coren’s class has led to him becoming a better student and becoming more focused in class, while also leading to him becoming more interested in said field. Mr. Coren has taught Visotsky how to use various websites that have helped him in the class and field. Thank you, Mr. Coren!

Conway, grade 10, expressed that Ms. Pagano, English teacher, has helped her grow so much as a person. Pagano helped her be more kind and optimistic.

Mr. Jared Luciani, physical education teacher, has helped Conway to not worry about what people think.

Conway is extremely grateful for these teachers.

Flanagan, grade 9, said that Mr. McCormack is an amazing teacher and makes her feel welcomed. McCormack is always checking up on her and making sure she is doing well. He has also helped Flanagan with sports, giving her advice and keeps pushing her to her full potential. Overall Flanagan is very grateful to be able to have him. Thank you, Mr. McCormack!

Ricci, grade 9, expressed to the Ledger that gym teacher and head wrestling coach Mr. Joseph Cervino positively impacted her school year at Lakeland. Ricci explained that Mr. Cervino has never failed to make her laugh, even when she is going through a rough time. Thank you, Mr. Cervino!

Wallace told the Ledger that math teacher Ms. Erin Murphy has had a positive impact on his school year. He stated that Ms. Murphy loves to have a constant flow of fun energy in her classroom by keeping a handful of jokes up her sleeve. Thank you, Ms. Murphy!

Arroyabe, grade 12, told the Ledger that a teacher that had a positive impact on them was Ms. Tammy Ozdemir, business teacher. They explained that even when they’re super tired in class, Ms. Ozdemir is always really polite and kind. Something that Ms. Ozdemir has said that has stuck with Arroyabe is that, “All degrees are the same in the end.”

Recently, Arroyabe has learned from physics teacher Mr. Giorgi Tchubabria that the total centripetal force is equal to mass times velocity squared divided by radius – something that will help them significantly with their future in engineering.

Brown, grade 9, tells the Ledger that physical education teacher Mr. Joseph Cervino has had a positive impact on him “because he’s a funny guy.” As Brown’s wrestling coach, he shared that Mr. Cervino saying “You’re good at wrestling” really stuck with him and helped to boost confidence.

Another teacher that has taught Brown something that can help him in the upcoming years would be Ms. Angela Carnavale. Brown says that she is teaching him the Italian language and this will follow him in the future.

Arzayus, grade 12, told the Ledger that art teacher Ms. Valerie Gawron has had a positive impact on her. She explained that Ms. Gawron has inspired her to be okay making mistakes throughout her art.

Something that a teacher has said that has really stuck with her for being funny and relatable was when English teacher Mr. Eric White said, “Nicole, you have word-vomit right now.”

Something that Arzayus has learned recently that will help her in the future was that it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. Math teacher and fencing coach, Mr. Brzozowski taught her that.

Acosta McCracken, grade 9, told the Ledger that Mr. Joseph Cervino has had a positive impact on her because “he’s really funny and has taught me about different sports.” He educates his students in sports and gives them advice that will follow them. She expresses that Mr. Cervino says something that will stick with her, “You can always be better than what you already are.”

Acosta McCracken has another teacher that has taught her something that will help her in the future, Ms. Heather Lazoff. Acosta McCracken shared that Ms. Lazoff taught her  “times tables and how to break numbers apart in your head, so you don’t have to use a calculator,” something she can use in future.

Cooper, grade 10, told the Ledger that Ms. Laura DeFerrari and Ms. Ann Pagano are amazing teachers and helped her learn so much. Something that stood out to Cooper is when Ms. DeFerrari said, “I’m so proud of you.” Something Ms. Pagano continues to help Cooper with is analyzing texts and other works of literature. Thank you to two amazing English teachers!

Gray, grade 10, told the Ledger that history teacher Mr. Richard Wiley had a positive impact on him “because he makes his classes informative and enjoyable.” Gray also pointed out that Mr. Wiley did something that truly stuck with him, when he nominated Gray for History Student of the Month.

When asked what he learned from a teacher that will help him in the future, Gray credited Mr. Jaroslaw Slusarczyk for telling him to “always have a good long term plan for whatever you do.”

Post, grade 10, told the Ledger that Mr. Cole Lankford had a positive impact on him “because his teaching keeps [him] intrigued and we have fun in his class.” Post also stated that Mr. Lankford shows him and his class inspirational movies that have really stuck with him through his day to day life. When asked what he learned recently that will help him in the future, Post credited Mr. Lankford’s teachings of how to run a business in the future.

Sherlock, grade 10, explained to the Ledger how Mr. Brian Brzozowski, math teacher, “had the best impact on me with my math grade because I went from a D+ to an A.”

Another math teacher who impacted Sherlock is Ms. Brielle Fanning. She gave her encouragement in saying, “Life always gets better.”

Tumser, grade 12, told the Ledger that Ms. Keri Ecker, teacher of history, had a positive impact on her by supporting her as she began her journey toward college.

When asked what she has recently learned about that will help her in the future, she cited Ms. Alyssa Pevny, science teacher, for teaching her the different stages of decay. She explained that she could use this information to assess the state of decay of roadkill while driving on Skyline Drive.
