Mariangel Astudillo Moreira, freshman, was nominated Student of the Month for Mathematics in September. Math teacher Ms. Brielle Fanning nominated Morerira for this award due to her dedication and skill. Moreira is in LRHS’ English language learner (ELL) program, and despite the potential challenges being a language learner may pose, Moreira has thrived in academics and has also helped the four other English language learners in the class understand lessons. Ms. Fanning continued, “Overall, I am choosing to nominate Maria for her great attitude every day, her helpful nature, her perseverance through difficult topics, and her overall amazing self.” Ms. Fanning concluded by saying that Moreira is “an integral part to our classroom” and that she “can’t wait to see how much she grows over the year!”
The Lancer Ledger interviewed Moreira, asking how she felt about receiving the award. She responded, explaining that at first, when she was called down to receive the award, “[She] didn’t know what was going on, then [her] counselor explained it to [her].” Receiving the award was quite unexpected for her, but once she realised what the award meant, she was very “proud and happy.” Moreira told the Ledger that despite math not being one of her favorite subjects, she loves solving problems. She also enjoys the way Ms. Fanning conducts and explains the class, since it helps her understand the subject matter quicker.
Moreira shared two fun facts about herself, the first being that she studied in Panama throughout her childhood and her second is that she comes from Ecuador.
