The race is only one component to a day at a cross country meet. So what else occurs on these anticipated days? Read on to find out about a day in the life of a cross country runner as the team takes on the Shore Coaches Invitational on October 2.
Preparations
The team arrived at Holmdel Park, ready to conquer their race. They set up their tent and began to prepare for their races.
Bib Numbers
As the races approached, each runner is given their bib that they must attach to their uniform.
Meet Fantasia
Meet Fantasia, the official mascot of Lakeland cross country. Fantasia travels with the team to every meet.
JV Boys: Striding In
First of the Lakeland teams that raced at this meet were the JV boys. Here is the team getting in some strides at the starting line just before their race begins.
Varsity Boys: Game Faces
Shortly after the JV race, the varsity boys arrived at their assigned spot on the starting line. The team had their game faces on and were ready to give it their all.
Varsity Boys: Start of the Race
Here, Lakeland stood alongside the other teams they raced against. They were lined up and ready to go on the starting line, moments before the gun marking the start of the race was shot off.
Boys Varsity: 17 Minutes Flat
Owen Horevay, junior, finished the race in 17 minutes flat, placing fourth.
Boys Varsity: Pushing for Third
Divine Crilly, junior, after finishing the race, told The Ledger that he was “really happy” and said, “I really has to push myself, which is pushing everyone else.” The boys finished in third place out of 23 teams.
Girls Varsity: Pre-Race Ritual
The girls varsity team stood in their usual pre-race huddle, moments before yelling “Lakeland” and returning to the starting line.
Varsity Girls: Ready, Set…
Seconds before the race began, the girls varsity team prepared for the hilly 5k course that lies ahead.
Varsity Girls: Perez for the Win
Supporters lined up as senior Angelina Perez sprinted to the finish line, taking 1st place and running a 17:37 on a course many consider to be the toughest in NJ.
Girls Varsity: Celebrating Victory
The girls team and their coaches celebrated their first place win with their trophy and new backpacks.
Celebrate Good Times and Victories
Members of both the boys and girls teams attended homecoming the same night of the meet, showing that, in addition to the moments on the courses, the team enjoys moments together that are non-sports related as well.
