LRHS’ Business Students Take On MetLife Stadium
Lakeland Regional High School’s FBLA chapter and Business Practice Firm class took a trip to MetLife Stadium for Sports Business Day to learn how to be successful and stay relevant in the business world.
On November 14, 2019, LRHS students joined over 1,000 students throughout the Tri-State to speak with Jets executives about managing a major sports stadium and the daily day-to-day operations.
According to Mr. Andrew Truong, the FBLA chapter adviser and math teacher at LRHS, on top of learning about marketing/advertising strategies and the costs that come with running a sports stadium, students were also taught about team branding, merchandising, and licensing.
“The main draw were the Jets executives telling students how they make money and stay relevant in the business,” Mr. Truong told The Ledger. He added that the executives talked about the importance of catering to VIP clients as well as the average fans.
Mr. Truong said the day was a huge success for his FBLA students and Ms. Jessica Geyer’s Business Practice Firm class as the students learn something new and different each time they attend Sports Business Day. It’s such a popular trip that Mr. Truong has had students go the past three years in a row, and each year they come up with more fun stories and knowledge of the business world.
Besides touring the stadium and viewing the VIP areas, broadcasting booths, and locker room, students were also treated to time on field. Mr. Truong talked about how awesome that was and that “some students brought a football and were able to toss the ball back and forth on an actual NFL field.”
FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America and gears high school students to become leaders in a global society through preparation and experiences.
An interesting fact learned during this trip: the seats are painted in a speckled fashion so the stadium gives the illusion of being filled even if it is not.
