National Spelling Bee End in 8-Way Tie
After 20 rounds and 565 spellers, the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which took place from May 26 to May 31, 2019, went down to 8 spellers. However, instead of putting these eight against each other, each contestant was crowned the winner in an eight-way tie due to the competition running out of words for each contestant to spell.
While the contested didn’t really mind the tie, many people were upset about it with critics saying things like, “Having over 500,000 different words in the dictionary, how do you run out?”
The competition starts with 11 million spellers starting a journey eight months ago in classrooms across America with a goal of making it to the national competition in Washington D.C.
Everyone in the contest did an amazing job, but hopefully next year they add more words so that the contest comes down to one winner.
