The Real ID is a form of identification that is an enhanced measure set up by the Department of Homeland Security that will allow anyone over the age of 18 that plans to fly domestically or visit federal facilities.
In New Jersey, the Real ID became an essential form of identification on May 7, 2025. Those who apply to renew their driver’s license or identification cards can choose to make it Real ID; however, it is not required. Once you receive your new card you will notice a black or yellow star at the top right corner. This star will allow you to board federally regulated commercial aircrafts, access federal government facilities or military installations, and enter nuclear power plants. It is important to note that valid passports can also be used in place of the Real ID.
The REAL ID Act was passed by congress back in 2005, after 9/11 there have been many more precautions being enhanced to ensure the safety of those flying in or out of the country. This Real ID helps airports have higher security and ensure there is no risk to those flying. Even if you do not have the Real ID you are still able to fly you will just need to bring your passport. To be able to actually receive your Real ID you must schedule an appointment at any DMV office or partner office. If you aren’t due for a license renewal and would like a Real ID, you can request your driver’s license or ID for a $30 duplicate fee. Once you have renewed your ID you should receive it in 20 business days.
According to ABC News, “To obtain a REAL ID, visitors to their state DMV must provide proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport), Social Security documentation, two proofs of address and documentation of lawful status in the U.S.” Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for a verified license or Real ID card. Those with a drive-only license aren’t eligible for a Real ID.
To be able to make your ID a Real ID you must make sure to bring:
