U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have been making arrests over the past couple months throughout the United States after President Donald Trump promised the largest mass deportation in history during his presidential campaign.
However, it has been reported that ICE has been making many arrests throughout the U.S., but some of those arrests have been questionable as they include no due process, the arrest of American citizens, and/or those in the process of getting their citizenship.
For instance, ICE officials destroyed property and forced a family out of their home even though they were not suspects, according to Newsweek. Another example is one shared with NBC News by Senator Andy Kim stating how ICE arrested Karim Dauod, Egyptian native, in early March, even though he had no criminal record toward his name. Kim said, “He has spent 21 years in the United States, married a U.S citizen, two U.S kids, and ICE themselves told me he has no criminal background.”
According to TRAC Immigration, the number of those detained by ICE has risen by nearly 20,000 over the past five years. Additionally, as of May 4, 2025, 43,4% of those detained have no criminal record.
Two big targets for ICE arrests are traffic stops and cold visits to places of business. During the first weekend in May in Nashville, ICE worked with Tennessee Highway Patrol to conduct 150 traffic stops that resulted in at least 100 people being detained by ICE. The organizations stated it for a “public safety operation.” Additionally, in May, ICE agents went into restaurants and businesses around Washington D.C. demanding to see immigration status. Although no one was arrested, ICE agents stated they would return.
