Luigi Mangione, the infamous killer of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was recently sentenced to death, leaving many stunned. This decision was reached after a lengthy and publicized trial, bringing an end to a long chapter in the investigation of Mangione’s violent criminal activity.
Luigi Nicholas Mangione, born on May 6, 1998 into a big family, his father had five sons and five daughters with a total of ten kids. They were reportedly shocked when they learned that Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024 for the murdering of Brain Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthCare. Mangione arranged this killing 5 days before and planned it prior to the murder. He used a 3D printed pistol as well with a 3D printed suppressor. Mangione was a student at Gilman School, an all boys school, before he graduated and headed to University of Pennsylvania where he received a bachelor’s in engineering. While receiving his bachelors, he worked at Firaxis Games and helped to create the Video Game called Civilization VI.
This case has offered many mysteries throughout the investigation but perhaps the largest mystery that goes unsolved is the question of why? Why did Mangione kill the UnitedHealthCare CEO? CBS News reports that “[police] said they think it has, in part, something to do with an injury Mangione suffered. ‘We’re learning that he did possibly suffer an accident that caused him to visit the emergency room on July, 4, 2023,’” The police also found a two and a half page document that police say might tie him to the crime. According to the NYPD chief of detectives Rebbeca Weiner, “When you start using rhetoric like ‘These parasites had it coming ,’ you are referencing an anti-corporatist mentality that goes beyond an individual grievance toward a particular injury he may have suffered.”

CBS also reports that Mangione was interested in Ted Kaczynski, a domestic terrorist known as Unabomber who was anti-technology. Weiner said “in his view violence can be justified to right social wrongs.” Despite all of the evidence and theorizing that both the public and the police have done, the mystery of why Mangione did what he did remains unanswered. However, police do have more evidence that shows that Mangione had planned this out, police found a notebook that according to CBS News “He wrote about considering using a gun over a bomb to carry out an attack because it was targeted, precise and didn’t risk innocents”
Many are questioning whether Mangione chargers are fair as they are talking about execution. ABC News reports that Mangione’s lawyer calls the decision “political,” saying, “it goes against the recommendation of the local federal prosecutors, the law, and historical precedent.”
Mangione was indicted by a Manhattan Judge on 11 counts. 1 count of murder, First degree, Second degree, along with other weapons and forgery chargers. Mangione has also managed to become the face of TikTok as many people are agreeing with his actions were justifying them. News networks have been reporting his love from people on TikTok after becoming the new face of the app.
Many are also saying that Mangione is not so innocent or brave. ABC News says Donald Trump said in an interview, “Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America.”
