Girls wrestling has gained significant recognition in recent years, breaking barriers and challenging traditional gender norms in the sports world. What was once considered a predominantly male sport is now seeing a rise in female participation, with girls showcasing their skills, strength, and hard work on the mat. This year, Lakeland Regional High School had 11 girls on the team, which is the most in LRHS history. This season was full of big challenges and big successes for all of our girls.
Coach Joseph Cervino expresses, “We had the first ever girls dual meets, picking up some great wins. We also competed in numerous tournaments throughout the year including competing at the prestigious Beast of the East at the University of Delaware. That tournament is one of the best high school girls tournaments in the country.”
Third year wrestler, Olivia McCormick, senior, had the most successful season out of all our girl wrestlers. McCormick finished the wrestling season with a record of 22-6 and placed second at the 2025 Elizabeth Lady Minuteman Classic and 6th at Beast of the East.
Team chemistry has been a standout feature this season, with the girls working cohesively and supporting each other through every match. McCormick highlighted this by stating, “I think the season went well for the team. We had the most girls wrestle this year than ever before and find their love for the sport. We had great team chemistry and worked hard the whole season.”
The team’s success this season is not just measured by their wins and losses but also by the personal growth and development of each wrestler. Many of the girls had never wrestled before, yet they embraced the challenges and rigor of the sport with determination. Their commitment to improving their skills and pushing their limits has shown throughout the year.
Looking ahead, the future of the team appears brighter. With a solid foundation built this season, the team is in good standings to excel. The experience gained by our girl wrestlers, combined with their unwavering team spirit, sets the stage for continued success.
Wrestlers on the team were seniors McCormick and Brooke Post; sophomores Ava Radice, Amanda Scarpati, Mia Frasca, Luciana Gallagher, Samatha Lara, and Alexandra McCracken; and freshman Aaleyah Keckeissen, Gabby Jaquez and Alondra Cuevas. Their dedication to the sport has not only resulted in impressive individual performances but also strengthened the team’s unity and camaraderie. Each wrestler’s commitment to pushing their limits and supporting their teammates has created a positive and motivating environment.
