Juan Soto, one of the New York Yankees best players during the 2023-2024 season, has been traded to the New York Mets for $765 million according to CBS Sports.
Some may think that $765 million is way too much money on a contract for one player. However, owners Steve and Alex Cohen state that, “This is a seminal moment in franchise history.” According to MLB.com, both owners also talked about how Soto has “generational talent,” “championship pedigree,” and “staggering historical statistics” which ultimately led them to spend so much money on a single player.
Mets fans are ecstatic about the signing of Soto for many reasons. NPR.org states during his year on the Yankees, he managed to hit 41 regular season home runs and four home runs in the playoffs. Soto checked all of the boxes that the Yankees needed. Soto was a left handed hitter, good base runner, and a good defenseman. This is what made him such a crucial player to the Yankees and why his contract from the Mets was so much money.
All of Soto’s qualities will help the Mets in the upcoming season which will hopefully bring the team farther than last season. In the previous season, the Mets finished third place in the National League Championship Series. Their record for the past season was 89 wins and 73 loses. It wasn’t the best season for the Mets but it also wasn’t the worst.
Soto being traded can be healthy for the Yankees for a few reasons as well. It may allow the Yankees to open new spots and sign people that could possibly give them the upper hand.
Soto was called up to the majors at just 19 years old and excelled from there. He reveals that he picked the Mets over other teams because they are committed to growing a dynasty.
One player can not make a whole team but with his help and with more trades the odds may be in the 2025 Mets favor.
