Lakeland Regional High School reading specialist, Mr. David Harris, is the 2024 Education Support Professional of the Year.
From his dedication to his hard work to helping students become the best versions of themselves, everyday Mr. Harris proves himself worthy of the honored and respected title of Education Support Professional of the Year. For years, Mr. Harris has helped students overcome challenges and obstacles that they face through his role as both a reading specialist and special education teacher.
Mr. Harris was more than overjoyed and surprised when he found out he was awarded this honor, which is determined through nominations by fellow staff members, students, and community members. Mr Harris said he was very thankful for his students and his fellow co-workers, saying, “I was really surprised and humbled to receive the ESP Award.”
His supervisor, Director of Special Services Ms. Audrey Pogilloi, also shares that she is very happy for him. She says that Mr. Harris “works tirelessly to ensure that every student, particularly those with special needs, has the tools and opportunities to succeed.” She also says that Mr. Harris’s ability to connect with students makes him an excellent choice for this award, explaining that “Mr. Harris goes above and beyond in his efforts to foster a supportive, inclusive, and empowering learning environment.”
Mr. Harris has been teaching at LRHS for the past 13 years, but he has been working as a teacher for almost 25 years in total. Mr. Harris says the best part of his job is helping his students evolve and grow, saying he works hard at “Tailoring the instruction to each student’s individual needs and seeing them grasp concepts that might have seemed challenging before.” Mr Haris connects with his students and tries to help them to succeed, making him a clear role model to the students of LRHS.
Mr. Harris’ role goes beyond the classroom, like starting the first special needs martial art program at a karate school where he has trained since 2006. The program has been going very strong throughout the many years since its creation. Mr. Harris talks about the program, saying, “Having this specialized program helps our students thrive in every way, and enables them to live their best life.”
It’s clear that Ms. Poggioli words that Mr. Harris “exemplifies the qualities that define an outstanding educator and support professional” could not ring more true! Clearly Mr. Harris is an excellent role model for the students of LRHS, and we have the privilege to give him this respected and honorable title.
Overall, Mr. Harris’ time, dedication, and hard work for the LRHS community is impactful. LRHS is honored to have a supportive and empowering educational support professional such as Mr. Harris.
