As the 2024 girls varsity cross country season came to an end, it is easy to say that it was a huge success with many wins and achievements.
On the season as a whole, Rebekah Setti, senior athlete, tells the Ledger, “I would say the season went incredible. I loved every moment and was so lucky to have such an amazing team.”
The team was very happy with the outcome of the ‘24 season as they medaled in almost every race, were conference and county champions, and they got sixth place in the state sectionals. One runner, Addison Parker, freshman, made it to the NJSIAA Group Championships. The girls team tremendously improved since last year, where they got second place in counties and conference; this year the team placed first in both.
Setti also shared that the team had hurdles to overcome, saying, “A big impact on the team was losing one of our top five runners due to injury.” However, she says that despite obstacles, the team had to keep their heads up and never give up even when things are not going their way. She recommends, “Use your anger and emotions to push you. Keep it fun and always have a positive attitude.”
Setti also said that the biggest improvements the team needs to work on is team bonding and more team spirit. Setti and Bethany Lamberti, senior, talked about advice for next season and advice for the future freshman of Lakeland who want to be on the varsity team, saying to train hard in the summer “to ensure a good season.”
Junior Hope Walker states, “Even though it was my first season on the team, I met the best group of friends and we accomplished so much. Even though nobody really expected our team to be that great this year, we proved to be the underdog.”
Overall the 2024 cross country season was a huge success, with many earning varsity letters and accolades for their work. The team can not wait for the next season of success and the new incoming cross country runners.
