From tests to essays to quizzes to homework, students have a lot on their plates. This can lead to a lot of stress. One common stress reliever that most students share: music. However, music can both help students and hurt students when they need to get work done.
How does music help students?
Music has a great effect on students’ moods and stress levels while also motivating them. In 2013, 60 females volunteered to carry out a study, which included a psychological test that showed decreased stress levels while listening to very relaxing music. Research also showed that patients in the ICU said that they felt less pain after listening to music for 30 minutes. The results suggested that listening to relaxing music made a physical difference to the way people respond psychologically and physically. It stated that a type of hormone response is released when listening to relaxing music while stressed; however, the picture was very complex and needed to be studied more.
According to another study in 2007, classical music specifically can help the brain gain more information more easily. Researchers have found evidence that music can help the brain pay more attention to events and make predictions.
Although the examples above may not be specific to students, this shows that music has the ability to keep stress levels down, boost moods, and help keep students focused on their studies.
Genre Matters
The genre of music one listens to can define them. Some listen to rock and others listen to hip hop, but it’s important to note: not all genres don’t help students in their studies. Some genres, such as ones that have too many distracting words or erratic changes in beat, can actually hurt or do the opposite on a student’s focus. If you’re looking for music that studies have found to be effective on studying, consider genres like classical and (some) country. That does not mean you can not listen to your favorite artists while studying; it just means you need to be mindful of the songs you add to your playlist.

The Lancer Ledger spoke to a few students, asking them what they use music for, most have said that they listen to music to concentrate, relax, and to just enjoy it. Youtube offers a lot of music that can help students at LRHS do that when allowed. Here are some:
Music can be an essential tool for some when it comes to their studies. It helps listeners concentrate, relax, and focus because it blocks out distractions from the world around us.
