President elect Donald Trump has selected Linda McMahon as the new educational secretary.
McMahon might be best known as one of the founders of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), along with her husband, Vince McMahon. WWE is currently in a lawsuit with five former “ring boys” and accused of child abuse.
McMahon has been a close ally to Trump throughout his political career. She supports his stance on closing the national Department of Education and sending control back to each state. This could mean federal funding and aid cuts for public schools. McMahon has also stated her belief in “competition and choice through charter schools” and “secondary school reform,” as stated ABC News. This could mean citizens have more choice in where they send their children to school and require struggling schools to go through an improvement process.
Apart from that, her educational and political background are brief. In 2010, McMahon served on the Connecticut Board of Education for one year, and in 2010 she ran for U.S. senate in Connecticut but lost to Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal.
McMahon still needs to be confirmed by the senate.
