Many around the Lakeland community looked up to the skies to view a rare sight in our area: the Northern Lights.
The Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis, are more common to our north. However, NOAA reported that a severe geomagnetic storm on Thursday evening into Friday morning caused the light show to be visible as far south as Alabama.
A geomagnetic storm occurs when solar material and magnetic fields erupt from the sun. Besides giving the earth an amazing light show, the geomagnetic storm can affect technology. NJ.com reports that this storm was strong enough to cause disturbances to satellites and weather technology.
Lakeland students reported seeing the event or viewing images posted by friends on social media.
This is the second time in a year that our area has been treated to the Northern Lights, and although our area will not get another glimpse of them tonight, reports state that Massachusetts and Connecticut could still get a show.
