Self expression is a cornerstone of the human condition, with creative writing specifically having fueled the spread of beliefs and opinions for centuries. The boundless potential of the medium not only serves as a personal outlet, but undoubtedly has potential to change the world. A thought provoking, well written paragraph could alter an individual’s perception permanently, and inspire them for a long time to come. Creative Writing Club at Lakeland promotes this avenue of expression in a time where reading and writing is on an overall decline.
The club promotes good writing habits by providing a sound work environment, constructive criticism, and, most importantly, creative freedom. Rebecca Stoffel, a junior and a member of the Creative Writing Club, summarizes the club as having “the freedom to write whatever you want,” and adds her favorite thing about the club is the free time to write and get feedback every meeting.
The lead teacher, Mr. Reeves, explains that his club “gives students who enjoy writing an outlet for creative energy” and that the club has a “supportful environment for healthy criticism.” Reeves encourages students with planned activities that include putting together a literary magazine.
To get started on a personal journey of creativity, stop by room 500 immediately after school on Thursdays. New members are always welcome.
